Hi guys, it's our second monthly activity check.

Here's the nice part - this is an OC-only game, so no one is character squatting. YAY!

Please respond here by midnight (PDT) November 9th letting us know which characters you're planning to keep and which characters, if any, you would like to drop. That's it. There are no other activity requirements as long as you don't leave other players hanging.

If you don't respond or you don't want to keep a character, your character/s will be re-tagged inactive and taken off the character roster. You have until the end of this calendar month to reclaim your character, and after that you will have to re-apply for that character.

I want to stress that contrary to stories I have heard about other OC games, your character will never be given to another player. This is your character and remains solely your property unless you choose to give that character to another player.

Player Voting - It's All You!
foggy
epicentric_mods
Okay, we had enough votes that application review now goes over to the players and we have our first application in under that system, so Liam gets to be our test case.

Here are a few key tools:
  • The voting guide - you'll want this for guidelines on what kind of votes you can submit

  • epicentric_apps There's are two tables in a header on this page (don't view it in your style or you won't see it.) The top table is current characters in play, the bottom table lists current application status. It's an easy way to see what needs voting.

  • The App Status: Voting Open tag is also a quick and easy way to find apps that haven't been stamped yet.
You may only join the apps comm with one journal, but I strongly recommend that you watch epicentric_apps with any journal you regularly watch epic with. Then you'll see when a new app is posted and you can go read it and vote.

Remember, vote as soon as you can, but do not vote on your own application. When an app reaches a majority (and I have the number listed on the app) then it can be stamped early. Otherwise it'll have to time out. You want your vote stamped with alacrity, so vote on your fellow players' apps quickly as well.

So now, go, use the tools to find it, and vote on Liam's app! I've had a lovely biiiig beer, so if I wasn't clear, please hit me up here or on the voting guide post.

OMG, app voting!
foggy
epicentric_mods
Okay, I closed the poll at midnight. There's enough (fairly overwhelming for the number of respondants) consensus that as of today, application review goes over to the players.

I held off on my own votes until I was ready to close the poll and didn't vote on the when. However, I'm in agreement with the much smaller majority regarding not voting on your own app. I think it's a foregone conclusion which way a player will vote on their own app and unfair to always weight each app by one vote in favor of approval.

We can revisit all policy matters in the future. In fact, I think it would be wise for us to do so on a quarterly basis. Today (9/22) is the Autumnal Equinox, so I'll see about posting a suggestions box around the equinoxes and solstices and we can revisit all policies in those discussions.

I'll post a brief tour of voting process after I get off work on Tuesday (expect something around 5:00 or 6:00 PST).

Thanks for your input, and I'm sorry if you missed out on the brief poll period. I should have planned a little earlier, and I'll try to give more input time on stuff like this in the future.

tumty tumty tum plot post ahoy
epicentric_mods
Just about time to start talking about the first big plot I had in mind. I wanted something that could start things off not tooo crazy...

Well, I'm not sure about that. Anyway, I have a short list of "big" plots, so any time you have an idea for a gamewide plot you'd like to share, please do. I'm big on collaboration for plot and on other people being clever so I don't have to be.

The first thing I have planned centers around the Church of Eternal Life. Long story short, non-master, and young vampires have to have a blood oath to another, more powerful vampire in order to have the power to rise at night, and it keeps them in line. It's a combination of metaphysical jumper cable and, eh, leash and choke chain and briefly detailed over here.

The Church of Eternal Life around the country has been violating that tradition and necessity by not blood oathing its members and providing only the weakest link to make sure they rise at night. It's a matter of principle to the Church, but "sane" vampires realize that this is a disaster in the offing. Without a strong master to lay down the law, these Church vampires can run amok without someone to yank the choke chain, and they're vulnerable to a more powerful vampire forcing them to take the oath.

Over the next six weeks, the Church's vampires are going to start losing it as an outside influence starts co-opting them, pushing them into behaviors they would normally avoid because of Church teachings or because of personal morality.

For you, this means that your characters can have assumed or played out encounters with vampires during the next six weeks that can escalate in intensity until two weeks prior to Halloween, at which time there are going to be a rash of vampire-committed murders.

I'm outlining a few things that can come of the escalating weirdness in the vampire world, but anything you want to add to it, drop me a line here or grab me in IM and I'll probably go "Awesome! Go for it!" except in rare cases where it actually violates game world mechanics.
  • Want a stalker? Perhaps a Church vamp takes an obsessive interest in your character. Thanks to a game mechanic that's kind of hard to find at times (homestead laws) at least you know that the vamp can't just wander into your house while you sleep at night. This can be NPCed (advance notice is great so I can draft some of our NPC volunteers, or you can ask and I'll give you the password to the NPC vamp account, epicentric_vamp.)
  • Perhaps your character witnesses a vamp feeding on someone and their agreement to the act is questionable at best.
  • Please don't actually start finding bodies until October 17 and later, but noticing people with unexpected vampire bite marks in obvious places is totally on the table.
  • Being one of those people who gets bitten with dubious consent is definitely an option. Perhaps your character wakes with bite marks and no memory of the night before.
  • If your character is affiliated with the police, they'll certainly be hearing more about these bites and stalkers.
  • As the next couple of weeks go by, the newspapers will start editorializing against vampires and against supes in general. Those of you of a non-human persuasion can start experiencing heightened prejudice. You supe haters can feel vindicated. ;)
I'm sure there are a myriad of other options to deal with a city with 300 non-oathed vampires. I'm giving you a bucket of tinkertoys, what you build with it is up to you.

If your investigator characters want to talk to the vampire leadership, Diodor will stonewall, Millicent (the city's church head) will be paranoid.

I would like to wait until the two weeks prior to Halloween to detail what's going to happen from there. The events will actually segue into the next game plot and I think two weeks will give you guys time to think about what you'd like to do with it.

On a related note, the big game plots will cycle through the various groups, so it'll be a while before another vampire-centric plot comes up. Next is Nevernever/demon, and I haven't decided which comes next. I would prefer to usually only do them once every two-three months. As a heads up, I do want to do plots with Three Eye, Denarians, the Harlequin, and scary shifter halfway houses. If you have suggestions for others, I would be more than delighted to hear them.

Addendum: If you have been considering playing a vampire character, you can play a Church vampire either during or after this plot. Hit me up and I can give you some pertinent character-creation details.

More ways to pimp

I said I'd do the much smaller advertising bugs for the game, and here you go. Six images to choose from, two ways to go - with the little ad text at the bottom or without. Share and enjoy! If you want the code for the entire post, let me know, I can share that, too.

Oh yeah, and the text blocks in the sidebars in the log comms are defaulting with some weird HTML. Sorry about that. I can't make it stop putting in the </ br> tag, so I'll have to make a workaround. Probably just switching the text up for straight c/p. It's on my to do list. FIXED

IMPORTANT: Apps and Spam
foggy
epicentric_mods
Hi guys. I wanted to let you know that I have had apps from two different people end up in my spam folder for some reason. If you submit an application and haven't at least gotten an acknowledgment from me within 48 hours, please ping me in IM, either with the mod IM: epicentricmod in either AIM or YIM, or my personal IM: butlerfetish in both AIM and YIM.

At no time should your app take more than 48 hours to get at least some kind of response, so don't hesitate to give me a poke.

Or pimp the game. You can c/p from the text box to get this ad. It's not compatible with all lj styles, I've noticed.

Welcome to an alternate universe you may recognize. The place is San Francisco, the year is 2009, and the world is much as we see it when we walk out our doors or turn on our televisions today.

With a small difference here and there.... There are vampires, lycanthropes, mages, faeries, psychics, and more among us.

And we know it. They're legal citizens with rights and responsibilities just as we have. They live among us, they pay taxes, and they attend our churches, or at least some of them do.

Don't let that fool you. It's not all hearts and flowers. Not everyone wants the supes to be legal, and there are plenty of humans who think that they should be wiped out entirely.

I'd do a little happy dance, but I'm still waking up.

Couple of notes: I've done everything I can so far to make things organized and findable, but there will be a few improvements coming in the next few days and weeks as I add an actual index to each of the character sections. (This game's been a labor of love, so don't think I'm really suffering here, even if some of you will hear me winge anyway.) If you can't find something, would prefer to see it linked differently, whatever, just let me know.

Right now the app community's tags are extremely anal. I think that the table at the top with the character list will probably get moved, but I'll be sure to have it linked in a number of different places to make sure it's easy to find.

I'd like your opinions on not starting application voting for another week to two weeks. I'd like players to get settled in and get a feel for how the game runs so they know what it is they're working toward when they vote on apps. If no one objects, then that's what I'll do. If you have a different preference, please let me know. If you have a time frame that you think would be best, please let me know that, too. The game's set up in such a way that player input is very important.

In the interim, I'm not being as hawkish with apps as I've been in other places. I'm figuring I'm going to leave it to you all to decide just how stringent you want to be.

Um... questions? Requests? Suggestions? Caffeine?

Seriously, anything you need, don't hesitate to ask. I may have put this together, but the game isn't a game or any fun without the players.

Now I'ma go play.

A couple of mod notes
foggy
epicentric_mods
I'd love/need/would kill for a co-mod. Ideally you need to know both Blake and Dresden canons just so you can more easily answer player questions so they don't have to know the canons. You need to be pretty chill when it comes to players, able to put your personal feelings aside and think about the big picture for the game, willing to take on some tedious maintenance work, and you need to be available a lot more than is sane. You must be reliable. If, after that rousing list of job requirements, you think you'd like to put your name up for consideration, ping me any which way you want and we can talk about it. I can also use less masochistic volunteers to just watch the log comms and ensure that all posts are appropriately tagged.

There will be a gamewide plot in late September. I want to give people a couple of weeks to get their bearings in the game and try to get a decent population of players and player characters before we start with a dash of mayhem. I'll be rotating through the factions with the big plots, highlighting different groups each time, but I don't intend to have them come up every day or week. They're more punctuations than the whole sentence and I would like to keep the big mod-driven plots to no more than every other month with this being an exception because what kind of urban fantasy game doesn't have a plot at Halloween?

Also, I will be at Dragon*Con from September 4 - 7. I will be reading applications during that time and sending out approvals, probably in the evenings. I get email on my phone and read it far too often, so don't hesitate to email me with questions or just ping the appropriate posts. I'll get back to you with ridiculous alacrity. I can't guarantee my availability in IM during that period, and for that I do apologize.

We're open for apps!
foggy
epicentric_mods
Epicentric is now open to take applications. Gameplay will begin September 8th with an inaugural post in DMZ for characters to have an opportunity to meet. You are welcome to begin making your own log posts once the DMZ post goes up.

As you submit your applications, I'll be mailing you back to let you know that the app has been received and will try to get back to you as quickly as possible with your acceptance status and a note on what to do once your character's been accepted.

Bringing this game together has been a labor of love and I hope that you enjoy playing here. If you have any suggestions, questions, comments, complaints, whatever, please don't hesitate to make use of the various means of mod contact listed here
